Cooking with my littles
Hi, I’m Angèle. Thanks for checking out my food blog, where I occasionally post about healthy, kid-friendly recipes. I have always enjoyed cooking, and now that I have two hungry little girls to feed and a very health conscious hubby, I have been able to experiment in the kitchen in a way that I hadn’t before. Typically, I have one toddler hanging off one hip, and the other toddler pulling up a stool to help – both reaching for whatever food they can get their hands on.
Learning to cook and eating together
Considering the wonderful cooks in my family (on both my French and American sides), I wish I had asked more questions throughout the years. Hopefully I’ve picked up a few things along the way though. The more I cook, the more I enjoy it. The more I learn, the more I realize there is to learn. I’m interested in learning about different ingredients, spices, cuisines, cooking techniques, history and culture around food, plating and photography. I wish schools taught history through the lens of food…wouldn’t that be neat? Sometimes I get carried away and buy more cookbooks than I have time to read. I love having friends over for dinner. It’s not always easy for me to pull off with young kids though. So if you come over for a meal, you might get something homemade, take-out, or a combo of both.
How we like to eat
In our family, we eat a little bit of everything, however I’m always curious to hear about people’s different dietary preferences and philosophies. In our home, we eat lots of veggies and fruits (preferably organic and seasonal), whole grains, nuts, a variety of seeds (like chia, flax and hemp), and lean animal protein (such as chicken and fish). I love steak, but we refrain from eating red meat that frequently. When I bake, I prefer to use unrefined sugar such as honey, maple syrup, molasses, dates, 100% cacao nibs, 100% cacao chips and other sweet fruits. We tend to save the decadent splurging for take-out pizza or date nights out.
Gardening
Recently, my husband has taken up gardening as a hobby. There’s something so unexplainably wonderful about picking fresh herbs and veggies from your own garden pots and planters. He’s been experimenting with strawberries, tomatoes, squash and different chiles (he is Mexican after all and loves spicy food).
Exploring flavor. Keeping it healthy.
Hubby and I love to travel and experience food from all parts of the world. Thus far, it’s looking like our daughters share our love for food and curiosity to try new flavors. They are the driving force behind my motivation to experiment with food and come up with healthy recipes we all love.
I’d love to hear from you
I’d love to hear from you, even if it’s just to drop in and say hello. Feel free to shoot me an email at healthykitchenlittles@gmail.com. If you have a question about a particular recipe, consider leaving a public comment on the recipe page. That way, others can benefit from the feedback too.
I look forward to connecting with you all! Now let’s start cooking delicious and healthy food!
